Whitney Biennial

I have written about my Pinterest, but I’m not sure if I’ve shared a link to my Tumblr yet. So here it is! http://michalgolanjewelry.tumblr.com . If you are a Tumblr user take a look at it. I love having so many different platforms and I love how image oriented Tumblr is, perfect for someone into art like me.

Also here are some pictures of my favorite art pieces from this weekends visit to the Whitney Biennial. The Biennial is an exhibition showing new or less known artists; so there is always some really interesting things there. I have been going to the Biennial since I was an art student at NYU. 35 years! Some years I found the show inspiring and impressive and some years it was disappointing. This year was a good one and the show was incredible!

large metal piece johnmason1What a treat to go see the show with my son on Mother’s Day. When my kids were young we used to spend part of every Mother’s Day in an art museum and they weren’t allowed to complain because it was my day. Now my 3 kids are grown and they are all art lovers, the investment paid off!

I liked the show for many reasons but a big one was that the show included many ceramic work. Clay was always considered a “second class citizen” of the art world but this show featured so much great work done in clay. My preferred medium is moving up in the art world.

A few artists especially stood out to me: Elijah Burgher, Etel Adnan, Peter Schvuff, Shio Kusaka, John Mason, and Sterling Ruby. The last three all worked with ceramics. I posted pictures of the pieces I admired the most! If you’re in the NY area be sure to check it out- there’s a ton of amazing art on view!
