The Met

Happy Monday. Hope everyone had a good weekend. Michael, my husband, is currently in Israel, so I had a lot of free time this weekend. First of all, here are some amazing pictures he sent me. I’m very jealous.  unnamed-5I didn’t get to see any flamingos this weekend, but I still had a pretty good time. I went to The Met and saw a really big variety of art. First is an amazing piece by El Anatsui. He is a Ghanian born sculptor who often works with clay or wood. This piece is made of aluminum but gives the impression of cloth. Very cool piece. unnamed

I also got to see some Roman sculptures from 2nd century. I have always been very inspired by this period in art. My main art form, other than jewelry, is mosaics. I get a lot of inspiration from ancient mosaics, even though mine seems quite contemporary. The piece below uses very small tiles to create a more realistic looking picture which is something I have yet to try.

I also got a chance to visit the Mourning Exhbit. It showed traditional Mourning clothes. Hundreds of years ago when women were still denied many basic rights, a widow was a very threatening person. She was experienced, older, and often times had inherited wealth and property. Societies tried to force these women to wear mourning clothes and signify their widow status for years, kind of like a warning sign. Aside from the interesting history, the clothes were just beautiful.

Lastly, I visited the Leonard A. Lauder Cusbism collection. Lauder, of the Estee Lauder fortune, was an art collector. He loved cubist art and had a very impressive collection which he recently donated to the Met. Check it out if you she the time!
